Project at a Glance

  Background
GK Project Boundary

The G.K. Irrigation Project was conceived in 1954 to improve quality of life and economic solvency of the people living in greater Kushtia and jessore district by achieving self-sufficiency in food through increasing agricultural productivity. It is the first and largest flood control, drainage improvement and irrigation project in Bangladesh.

Location and Area
The G.K. Project is situated on the right bank of the river Ganges just below the Hardinge Bridge. The project is bounded by the river Ganges on the north; the Gorai- Madhumati in the east; the Naboganga in the South and the Mathabhanga in the West. The project area comprises part of Kushtia Sadar, Kumarkhali, Khoksha, Mirpur, Daulatpur & Bheramara upazilas of Kushtia district; Chuadanga & Alamdanga upzilas of Chuadanga district; Jhenaidah, Harinakunda & Shailakupa upazilas of Jhenaidah district and Magura & Sreepur upazilas of Magura district. The project covers an area of 197,500 hectares of land, out of which 142, 000 hectares are irrigable.

ProjectObjectives

The main objective of the project is to improve quality of life and economic solvency of the people living in the project area by achieving self-sufficiency in food through increased agricultural productivity. The project also provides an appreciable development in communication and other socio- infrastructures.

With many constraints the project has achieved near about 75% irrigation target for Kharif-I1 season. In Indonesia and Philippines irrigation achievement in there project areas is not more than 70% - 75% . In Bangladesh the G.K. Project is the most successful FCDI project implemented so far.
  Yearly Operation & Maintenance
5 Vent Regulator

The project needs about Tk. 290 million for operation and maintenance_ of the project in each fiscal year. To meet up the expenses of 0 & M a part of the 0 & M budget has been levied from the beneficiaries as water charge through registered water users group (WUG) but the collection from the beneficiaries is not remarkable.

Five-vent Regulator on Main Canal

Poverty alleviation

After implementation of the project the crop intensity has increased from 125% to 226%. Cultivation of HYV is almost 100% within the project area compared to 20% at national level. Production of crops was 12-13 maund per acre but while the project completed the production increased 5-6 times higher. Communication infrastructure is so developed here that every village, union, upazila is connected by earthen / pucca roads with the district.

Bumper Crop

There are so many educational institutions, masjids, madrashas, market places and health institutions. The people especially women in rural areas are involved in many small and cottage industries. The number of rice mills is uncountable . Besides these the farmers also cultivate vegetables, bananas, bettle and other cash crops. Now the area has become self sufficient in food production. Quality of life of the people has improved due to increased agricultural productivity and Water supply & Sanitation facilities.

Literacy rate has increased. There are many cooperatives here comprising of central cooperative association, 750 primary cooperative societies, 24 tertiary water users association and 194 outlet management communities. The farmers are involved in irrigation management and agriculture development activities through these associations.
