River Erosion Problem |
| |
| |
River erosion is the main threat to the project. Since its implementation, the flood embankment has so far been retired for 4 times due to severs erosion of river Meghna. The river has engulfed 5000 hectors area within the project and 3000 hectors outside the project. Continuation of the river erosion practices in different lacatioon along the embankment of Haimchar Upazilla again 10 km. flood embankment in between km. 72.00 to km. 82.00 is seriously threatenet. To protect the project from river erosion, a project proposal named 'Chandpur Irrigation Project Protection Project' with an estimated cost of Tk. 382 crores has been prepared and submitted to the inter-Ministerial/Pre-ECNEC meeting and discussed. As per decision and instruction, model study is going, result of model study will be submitted shortly. |

Present Situation and Recommendation |

Erosion situation has been developed again during May/2000 due to increase of water level along with severe current compiled with bed scouring from Tajkharkandi to Maddaybazar under Haimchar upazilla and the river has eroded Charbairabi U.P. office, including other infrastructure threatening the existence of the flood embankment in between kin. 73.50 and km. 76.50 of which, the embankment at a length of 1.20 km. has been eroded by cyclonic storm on 28.10.2000. The river is advancing towards the embankment. In the meantime 3 km. embankment in between km. 73.50 and km. 76.50 has been completely eroded. The erosion trend of the Meghna river is towards left bank i.e. towards Chandpur Irrigation Project. |
